這些錄音帶不是外公錄的 — 是他撿回來的。 有人把二十一盤盤式錄音帶丟棄了，外公偶然發現： 德國 BASF 帶盒，手寫的標籤，錄著一九六〇年代的潮劇電影原聲 — 廣東潮劇團、廣東青年潮劇團的演唱，林舜卿、陳淑粧、范澤華、 黃清城、吳麗君的聲音 — 正是他的家鄉話。 別人眼中的廢物，在他聽來是鄉音。彷彿注定，該由他來保存。

Grandpa didn't record these tapes — he rescued them. Someone had thrown them away: twenty-one reels in German BASF boxes, hand-labelled, holding 1960s Teochew opera film soundtracks. What someone else discarded turned out to be recordings in his own dialect — the voices of home. It seemed almost fated that he would be the one to find them, and to keep them. Sixty years on, the reels were digitised on an Otari MX-5050 and preserved here.
