It premiered in Singapore in June 1962 and packed cinemas into the following year — the cinema ad pasted on Grandpa's card marks the 37th day of that first run. The 'Man Wu Lo' of the advertisement is the Marlborough on Beach Road — Shaw-owned from 1938, a Chinese-film house until it was demolished for Shaw Towers; this run of Third Sister Liu played on into January 1963 — 968 screenings, over half a million admissions, an all-time Singapore record — a year at odds with the box's own 16.6.61, a puzzle still open. For its star Huang Wanqiu (1943–2023) the road turned dark: when the film was condemned as a 'poisonous weed' in 1967 she spent nearly a decade in enforced obscurity, rehabilitated only when its songs returned to the air in 1978; she died on 4 March 2023.
